"Once I and those closest to me accepted my gay identity, a lot of the challenges had to do with making peace with the fact that many gay men have ableist attitudes, particularly when it comes to dating and relationships. What took me about ten years and a doctoral dissertation to figure out is that in this very intimate realm of people’s lives it’s actually okay for individuals to be ableist and that, as hard as it is, those of us with disabilities have to accept ourselves and find someone who loves us for all parts of who we are. In this way of thinking about things, disability is but one dimension of intimate compatibility, much like having mutual interests or the like."
